ARK

Afgelopen jaar ging ARK in première; een dansvoorstelling op een sculptuur als podium en decor voor twee dansers. De voorstelling werd o.a. gespeeld op festival Boulevard, Deventer op Stelten, Poolshoogte, Makersfestival Twente, AZC, Culturele Zondagen Breda en Hart van Zuid Festival. Ook dit jaar blijft ARK op het programma staan.

ARK is een half uur durende dansvoorstelling in de publieke ruimte. Er ligt een sculptuur midden op een plein, alsof het zo uit de lucht is komen vallen. Het is een beeld dat uitnodigt om van alle kanten te bekijken. In één oogopslag is niet duidelijk hoeveel vlakken er zijn. Het is maar net welke invalshoek je kiest wat het beeld prijs geeft. Twee dansers, ieder met een eigen stijl, verkennen de mogelijkheden, speels en vloeiend, maar ook ruw en risicovol met invloeden van freerunning. Zo nemen ze het publiek aan alle kanten mee in hun choreografie.

Omdat de sculptuur groter is dan zij zelf, hebben ze elkaar nodig om het in beweging te krijgen. Regelmatig verschuift de macht. De onderlinge druk brengt de sculptuur tot een kantelpunt: hét moment van rust, schijnbare stilstand en dan het moment dat een kanteling niet meer tegen te houden is. Kantelpunten kennen we vooral uit berichtgeving over het klimaat. Hoe de extremen de druk op de samenleving opvoeren. Kunnen we met een gezamenlijke inspanning er alles aan doen wat nodig is om een omslag naar een onleefbare wereld te voorkomen? Waar begin je dan?

In de programmalijn When nature takes over van Dansnest gaat ze op zoek naar het antwoord op de vraag hoe we kunnen overleven als de natuur het overneemt. En hoe dat de omgang met de ander beïnvloedt. Aanvankelijk waren het de klimaatextremen, o.a. overstromingen zoals zomer ‘21 in Limburg, die ons bezighielden. Daarom bedacht Dansnest ‘ARK’. De pandemie kreeg ons ook langdurig in de greep en maakte ons kwetsbaar en onzeker over de nabije toekomst. Met deze ingreep van de natuur en haar wereldwijde impact ontstond het idee te bouwen aan een ark om ons voortbestaan te kunnen garanderen.

Antwoorden worden gezocht in een serie werken die komende jaren gepresenteerd gaan worden i.d.v.v. ontmoetingen met de stad. De ontmoetingen met verschillende makers en stadbewoners gaan plaatsvinden op de daarvoor meest geschikte locaties in de publieke ruimte, binnen en buiten.

A body in the space, no matter if human or object, influences the environment around itself.

And in the presence of this object a person is pushed to interact with it. Like in every relationship, the dynamics between bodies and object can be initially soft and gentle, studying how to approach each other, searching for a harmony and a common understanding. But at the same time, misunderstandings and too many risks taken can change something that in a first moment could appear safe, letting it become an angular and dangerous situation.The presence of a third body introduces a new variable in the situation again. In ARK we are discovering these relations between different kind of bodies.

A massive geometrical sculpture, an octahedron, can lose its shape and heaviness, changing prospective in space and time, but only due to the presence of these other bodies. The perception of this sculpture can totally be lost in the understanding of how the bodies interact and play with it. The public, free to change its own view and position in space, becomes part of this relation as well. Sometimes the constant change of prospective in the interaction between bodies and object is not fully graspable, making the public wonder what the consistency of what they are looking at is, letting them experience a changing concept of balance-unbalance.

During the performance we discover how we can totally trust someone, understanding that without this person we would not be able to stand on our feet. The presence of someone else eventually makes us discover a different side of ourselves, see new prospectives and makes us find a different, previously unknown, path. In this process, we can immediately connect with the developments that we clearly see in the society and environment around us. The possibility of imminent problems and changes in life, created by social tensions, climate change and natural disasters, cannot make us stand still and static in our position.

It makes us realize that we need to act now, to take someone with us, to take care of this person and that we need someone to trust during the journey towards this unthinkable future. At the same time, it makes us think that we would also like to see the same attention towards us, we would like to be taken care of, to be someone’s need and trusting pillar. ARK, like this, becomes a journey of our idea of safety, security and what balance and trust deeply means in our lives.
